Designing Yarn + Special Event with Sweet Georgia Yarns

Imagine your job isn't just to design knitwear, but also to design the actual yarn that goes into your knits!  That is exactly the life that Kate Gagnon Osborn and Courtney Kelley of Kelbourne Woolens live. The authors of Vintage Modern Knits are the creative brainpower behind The Fibre Company. Here is the story behind the story: Founded in Portland, Maine, The Fibre Company had humble beginnings as an alpaca fiber processor. As time passed, the owners, Daphne Marinopoulos and Iain Stanley, began experimenting with their own unique fiber blends and hand dyeing techniques. From 2004-2007 they spun and dyed all the yarns in their mini-mill in Maine.  In 2008, Kate Gagnon Osborn and Courtney Kelley, owners of Kelbourne Woolens, began working with The Fibre Company to develop pattern support and manage the day-to-day aspects of the business. The production of all the yarns (with the exception of Savannah, which is still US made) was moved to Peru where yarn and fiber production have a long tradition dating back centuries.  Stop by the shop to see (and feel) our favorite yarns from their line, Acadia, Road To China Light, and Terra plus copies of Vintage Modern Knits. To read more about their journey, check out this extensive interview from their blog

Meet The Maker: Felicia Lo of Sweet Georgia Yarns!

While we are on the subject of designing yarn, we are thrilled to host a joint special event with The Loopy Ewe and Felicia Lo of Sweet Georgia Yarns.  Felicia is in town to teach a class for Craftsy.  Two of her three yarn shops in Colorado are in Ft. Collins, so she is paying us a visit.  Join us at Genoa Coffee and Wine from 6-8 pm on June 2 to meet Felicia and her yarns.  There will be door prizes, samplings of her yarns and fiber, plus food (cucumber salad and kebabs anyone?).  This event is free, but there is limited space.  Each shop is allotted 15 spots. Please RSVP to My Sister Knits by emailing Julie at julie@mysisterknits.com or calling the shop at 970-407-1461.  If the slots fill we will keep a waiting list and let you know if a slot opens up.

Project Linus, Cascade Eco Duo and Julie's Favorites!

Working Within the Community

We've mentioned in the past that we're going to be doing some charity projects in the coming months to help give back during the holidays.  We'd like to announce an on-going collection for Project Linus!

Project Linus is an amazing nation-wide organizaiton that has a mission we knitters can stand by: "to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans."  That is why MSK will be collecting any donated items for Project Linus.  If you would like to donate blankets, keep reading for their blanket-making guidelines. (Please note: what's listed here is what they are specifically in need of, as requested by Project Linus.) You can also go here for some free patterns.  Additional needed items: stamps (for thank you letters and post cards); yarn in children and baby colors (acrylic, please no wool); cotton fabric for making quilts; batting for quilts; gift cards to craft stores such as JoAnn's, Michaels or Hobby Lobby.  If you would like more information on this organization or would like to volunteer, please visit the Project Linus website.

Blanket Making Guidelines

  • Child size: 36"x40", up to 40"x60".  These sizes are appropriate for grade school age children.  Bright, kid-friendly colors are great!  They always need boy-themed blankets in this size.

  • Older youth and teen size: 48"x60" up to 60"x72".  These sizes will work well for mose Junior and Senior High School kids.  If you are making a blanket this size, think in terms of what fabrics, yarns and fleece would appeal to a teen.  A two yard long piece of fleece would make a blanket appropriate in size for an older teen.  Again, they are always in need of boy blankets in this size.

  • Please remember to wash your blanket with unscented detergent and fabric softener before donating it to Project Linus.  This simple action is very important to the hospitalized babies and children who may be receiving your blanket.

New in the Shop

Cascade Eco Duo is an awesome yarn, made up of 70% Merino and 30% Alpaca.  It's a single-ply yarn, which makes it super soft and warm.  It comes in five shades of un-dyed delight, and MSK is pleased to announce that we now have all five shades!

Cascade Eco Duo

Each skein has subtle color-changes to it, so it will fade and darken with whatever project you choose.  A 100 gram skein yields 197 yards (or 180 meters), so it's perfect for hats, mittens, gloves, slipper-socks, and anything else you have planned for keeping yourself and your loved ones warm this winter.  Stop by the shop to see the samples, and to pick up some of your own (before it's gone)!

Staff Favorites

We here at MSK are fickle knitters ... we have a lot of favorites, and we always have a lot of NEW favorites!  That's why we're going to start mentioning them to you here, so that you can take advantage of our latest and greatest finds.  This week, some of Julie's faves:

Pickles Patterns (website and blog) -- these cute patterns are written by a woman in Norway, who has also translater her patterns into English.  We love her kids' patterns and her chunky, warm and cozy sweaters.

Marie Mayhew (designer) -- we are so thrilled to have Marie coming here on November 8 that she is a sure-fire favorite!  Her holiday decorations are creative, clever, and easy to knit up.  Please join us for a meet-and-greet from 6:00 - 9:00pm, and hear Marie talk about her designs, and additional ideas for embellishments to them!  Space is limited, so please call the shop to RSVP.  (Cost is $5, and we'll have refreshments!)

Marie Mayhew is Woolly Something

Marie Mayhew has a wonderful imagination.  Her felted friends and decorations add a sense of whimsy to every holiday, and we love the friendly faces that appear on her snowmen, sheepies and gnomes. Her designs make non-knitters go "Ooooooh!!" when they see what you've been able to whip up with the help of your washing machine and some super hot water, and felting can be really fun.

That's why we're really excited that Marie is coming to share some of her secrets and embellishment ideas with us at My Sister Knits!  On Tuesday, November 8, Marie will be in the shop from 6:00 - 8:00pm with a trunk show of her wonderful creatures and creations.  She'll talk for a little while about what it takes to create her designs, and share some other ideas for adding decorations as well.  It's only $5 to join in the fun, so be sure not to miss this one!  In the meantime, read up on what Marie is working on by visiting her blog and her Ravelry pages.

Cascade 220 Superwash Trunk Show Part II

There are so many cute baby knits as part of the Cascade 220 Superwash Trunk Show that we had to split them into two posts. Julie Conway is a great friend of the shop, and we were really thrilled when she brought in so many cute baby things. Part I showed you some of the unisex and boy items, so Part II will show some of the girl items.

All of these patterns, and then some, are part of the book 60 Quick Baby Knits, available at the shop. Julie will also be teaching her Heels and Gussets class on Tuesday, October 18 ... a great class for sock knitters and sock knitter wannabes! Stop by the shop for more details and to check out these sweet samples.

Cascade 220 Superwash Trunk Show Part I

Julie Conway has always demonstrated her awesome knitting skills.  Her Learn to Knit I and II classes are staples of our class schedule, and we love seeing her finished objects.  When she brought in finished projects from the sweetest book we've seen in a long time, 60 Quick Baby Knits, we couldn't stop ooh-ing and aah-ing.

60 Quick Baby Knits is a book that has exactly what the title promises: 60 quick and adorable projects for boys and girls, each one knit out of Cascade 220 Superwash.  Julie has knit several items out of this book, and we have them on display at the shop, so be sure to take a look when you're there.

Here are our favorite unisex and boy pieces:

Striped Leg Warmers and Lace Motif Cardigan

Hooded Pullover

And how cute is this sheep hat??  We love the backside ....

Stop by the shop to see these samples, and more!  And don't forget, Julie is teaching her Learn to Knit II class on Tuesday, October 11.  This is a great class for increasing, decreasing, slipping stitches, joining yarns and combining stitches to make rib stitch and seed stitch. Stay tuned for Part II of the Trunk Show as well ....

We Love Purl Bee

It's always exciting to get a new set of patterns in, no matter where they come from.  When we're lucky enough to see new patterns from designers and companies that we love, then it's an extra reason to celebrate!

One of our all-time favorites here is Purl Bee, by Purl SoHo.  Purl SoHo is a great shop in SoHo, Manhattan, and they have an awesome blog and newsletter that is always awash with excellent knit and crochet patterns, as well as writings on quilting, designers, other products, and so much more.  Julie recently finished two Purl Bee projects, and they definitely get us in the mood for some Autumn Knitting!

This owl is such a cute and friendly face!  This one is knit out of two strands of Cascade Yarns Eco Cloud held together, then stuffed with organic cotton.  It's soft, squooshy, and cuddly.

This crocheted blanket is another warm and cuddly thing to curl up with.  Perfect for napping during chilly afternoons, this blanket is made out of Madeline Tosh Light.  It's an easy project and quick to whip out, and the colored stripe adds just the right amount of interest and pop.

Stop by the shop to see these samples in person and check out the other projects we love from Purl Bee!

Ann McCauley

We are very lucky to have no shortage of fantastic teachers come to My Sister Knits.  We have a great advantage here in Fort Collins to have access to so many great knitting minds, and we are truly thrilled to be able to offer a wide range of classes to you.  One of our favorites returns this October, Ann McCauley.

Featured design from Ann's book, The Pleasure of Knitting

Ann is a designer, author and teacher who brings a wide range of artistic influences to her knitwear designs.  She's been designing her own sweaters since 1980, focusing on solid colors, smooth fibers, and heavy textures that combine classic and contemporary elements.  She has written two books (The Pleasure of Knitting and Together or Separate) and is featured regularly in Knitter's Magazine

We are thrilled to be offering two classes taught by Ann.  On Saturday, October 1 from 10am - 1pm, Ann will teach Sweatertime!  This class covers details such as swatching and checking gauge, selecting the right fiber and yarn, measurement, fit, increasing and decreasing, seaming and blocking.  Then, from 2pm - 5pm (also on Saturday, October 1), Ann will teach My Favorite Hat!  This is a great class to become comfortable with knitting with double-pointed needles, knitting in the round, I-Cord and attached I-Cord techniques.

Space is limited in these classes, so call the shop today to sign up.  Happy knitting!

The One and Only Cat Bordhi

It's a little hard to describe Cat Bordhi.  If you're familiar with her YouTube videos demonstrating cast-ons, sock toes, sock heels, Moebius cast-ons, Moebius techniques, and so on.  If you're familiar with her writing, you know about her First and Second Treasuries of Magical Knitting, Socks Soar on Circular Needles, and her New Pathways for Sock Knitters followed by the Personal Footprints for Sock Knitters (did I mention her children's book?).  If you're familiar with her as a teacher, you may have met her at Sock Summit or an LYS, trying to absorb as much as you can from this brilliant mind in the few hours that you have.  Suffice to say, Cat has no shortage of accomplishments under her belt.  Which is why we were thrilled to have her in Fort Collins for a few days to teach her new Sweet Tomato Heel, and her Personal Footprints classes.

The classes were packed with more information than a knitter can handle, and even if you had read her books cover-to-cover, there were still a few tricks and trades to take home.  Did you know a great way to reinforce hard-wearing areas in your socks (like the heel, or ball-of-foot) is to carry a strand of Kidsilk Haze or Kidsilk Seta along with it?  Me neither.

Cat's website has links to her books and some extra videos, but a simple YouTube search with her name will bring you more  new skills than you knew you wanted.  (Warning: You can't watch just one.)

In short, it was a great few days to have her here, and we can't wait to have her back.  If you ever have the chance to take a class from Cat, we highly recommend her!  Feel free to stop by the shop to talk to us about our experience or share yours, or pick up a copy of one of Cat's books.

Christmas in July with Brooklyn Tweed!

We here at My Sister Knits are HUGE fans of Jared Flood and Brooklyn Tweed (that's a link to his Ravelry pages).   His patterns are simple and brilliant, making use of lace, cables and the ever-wonderful garter stitch.  Not to mention his photos: Jared Flood is an excellent photographer and the photos of his knitting make even the busiest knitter want to curl up with a cuppa and some nice scrunchy wool.

A native of New York, Jared takes inspiration from his neighborhood in Brooklyn.  His blog alights with his gorgeous photos and explanations of where he finds his inspiration and ideas for his lovely patterns.  He has recently been blogging about his experiences with some Elizabeth Zimmermann (another inspiration of his) treasures that have crossed his path.  You can read about the process he went through to create his own yarn line, Shelter (unfortunately NOT available at MSK).  Be sure to read up!

While Jared won't be able to join us this summer, we're contenting ourselves with his beautiful projects.  Patterns are available for the Girasole Lace Shawl-Blanket (shown above), Wool Leaves Baby Blanket, Shale Baby Blanket, Cinder Cable Scarf, Fenimore Cabled Tam, Habitat Cabled Beanie, Tweed Baby Blanket, Guernsey Wrap, Celes Lace Stole, Umaro Textured Throw, Cobblestone Pullover and Porom Lace Hat.  Samples will be available in many of these patterns, and we'll be doing featured blog posts on them throughout the month.  Happy knitting!

Artist Profile: Vicki Square

One of the first knitting reference books many new knitters purchase is Knitter’s Companion, written by Fort Collins’ own Vicki Square. Coveting the Barbie clothes her maternal grandmother was making, Vicki was taught to knit at the age of 6 so she might make her own. While she is most known for her knitting, she has a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking and also takes pleasure in mixed media drawings utilising as diverse materials as paper, paint, oil or charcoal pastels, and fiber.

“As an artist, I’ve been creating art to adorn the human figure for much of my life,” says Vicki. Historical fashion and theater is a favorite source of inspiration for her designs. She is most known for designing outerwear with timeless style. Her 2007 book, Knit Kimonos was a huge hit with its simple shapes and attention to detail. A follow-up volume, Knit Kimono Too is coming in early December. This collection of patterns is more contemporary; the projects a realistic commitment of time and yarn with many being only hip length. Her Knitter’s Companion title is also being re-released in early December with 2 companion DVDs comprising more than 4 hours of learning - a great gift for newer knitters on your gift list. Besides authoring several knitting titles, Vicki has also contributed to many collections and magazine publications.

Sharing her vast knowledge and experience in knitting is a joy for Vicki. Teaching is an opportunity for her to connect with others who are passionate about both knitting and exploring something new. On October 12th Vicki will be teaching an Adventures in Color workshop here at My Sister Knits. As part of the class students will learn some of the foundations of color theory and the accompanying vocabulary. Then Vicki will demonstrate how to develop a color palette which will then be used to knit a mitered square pillow. Past students have raved about the class and left with increased confidence in working with color. It is definitely a not to be missed class!

You can call the shop to reserve your spot in class with a credit card or stop in to sign up in person.
