Celebrating The Fibre Co. Amble

Any yarn from The Fibre Co. is amazing to knit with. When you pick up a skein and squish it, you immediately want some for yourself!

Daphne Marinopoulos founded the company in 2003 when she bought a small mill in Maine. There, she could experiment with blending different fibers to create yarns that weren’t available then. She came to the fiber industry from an interesting background, both in corporate America and as a commercial pilot! It’s rather amazing how many people have left their original careers to devote time, energy, and love to their fiber passion.

The Fibre Co. is now based out of Cumbria in England’s Lake District. From its small beginnings, it has grown to be known worldwide as a yarn company with unique yarns that are dependably delightful to knit with!

My Sister Knits has a new shipment of their fingering weight sock yarn, Amble, on our shelves! This lovely yarn is a blend of 70% Easy-wash Merino wool, 20% Easy-wash Alpaca, and 10% recycled nylon.

Easy-wash is a new process that makes the yarn machine washable without shrinking. While traditional super-wash methods use chlorine and create hazardous chemicals and toxic wastewater, Easy-wash doesn’t. The fibers are treated with certified eco-friendly oxidants to remove the scales that cause shrinkage.

The recycled nylon used in Amble comes from leftover industrial waste of processing nylon. This reroutes waste from landfills and uses less water and fossil fuels.

The Fibre Co. normally uses only natural fibers but, since Amble was created to be a sock yarn, Daphne wanted the strength of nylon added. She feels good about using the recycled nylon!

When you look at the colors of Amble, you’ll notice that Daphne’s color inspiration comes from nature. We have many more than are pictured here in the shop!

If you’d like to learn more about The Fibre Co. and Daphne, here is a link to a Fruity Knitting podcast from a few years ago. It starts at the 39-minute point.

Holiday Clothing Drive

Our annual clothing drive for the students at Putnam and Irish Elementary schools is underway! New undergarments and warm clothing are needed. When you drop off your donation (before December 17th), you will receive an entry to win a $50 My Sister Knits gift card!

We invite you to ask us about our pattern recommendations for machine-washable Amble the next time you’re in the shop!

Happy knitting,
